The Friedrich Debate
I think Friedrich or the narrator ( his friend ) is the main character as this story would not be told if not for these characters. The plot is based on their lives and from true facts such as events during the Holocaust. The formula is " no main character = no story "
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, this depends on our definition of main character. In some points it differs from the most important character.
Main characters are those that are the main focus of the story ( e.g. in AWIT the main character is Meg as the whole story focuses on her and her journey to search for her father. ) OR those that are close to the above said person.
The most important character, however, is the one that has a large impact on the plot ( e.g. if not for Meg's father disappearing, the story AWIT won't exist. After all no one in their right mind would whisk you off to fight some huge brain for absolutely no reason. ). I am starting to feel confused, so let's assume they are of similar meaning.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And, ( drumroll ), the list of important characters in Friedrich:
1. Friedrich!
Reason: Without him, this story is nothing. Furthermore, in a way he represents the Jews. The whole plot revolves around him. And, NO, not ORBIT.
2. The Narrator!
Reason: If the narrator did not tell the story there will not be this book. This follows in the above-mentioned formula.
3.Herr Schneider!
Reason: From here the author can use facts such as the Persecution to put action in the plot. After all it is historical fiction! He is important as there would be little action in the story if the author does not include him. Some problems stem from him being a Jew, just like Friedrich.
4. Herr Resch! ( NOT HER RASH )
As he was a Nazi member, for the same reason as Herr Schneider he is also vital to the story.
